Value Area Low (VAL): How to Trade Support and Breakdowns

Updated 28 Sept 2026

Every trader wants to buy at a good price. Volume Profile gives you a practical definition of “good”: the lower edge of where the market recently agreed on value. That edge is the Value Area Low (VAL). Below it, the market is trading at a discount to recent value. Above it, price is back in accepted territory.

In this guide you will learn what the VAL is, why it often acts as support, and three ways to trade it in the Forex market.

What is the Value Area Low?

The Value Area Low is the bottom boundary of the Value Area, the price range that contains about 70% of a period’s volume. The Value Area is built around the Point of Control (POC), and its top boundary is the Value Area High (VAH).

Think of the value area as the market’s comfort zone. The VAL marks the lowest price inside that zone where buyers and sellers were still actively trading. On Forex CFD charts the calculation uses tick volume, so the level is best read as a zone of a few pips.

Why the VAL Often Acts as Support

When price falls to the VAL from inside the value area, it reaches the cheapest price that the market recently accepted. Two groups tend to react there:

Their combined buying can halt the decline and push price back towards the POC. However, if sellers overwhelm them and price is accepted below the VAL, the market is signalling that value is moving lower, often the start of a bearish phase.

Three Ways to Trade the VAL

The VAL bounce

This is the mirror of fading the VAH, and it works best when the market is balanced or in an uptrend.

The VAL breakdown

When the broader trend is down, the VAL is more likely to break.

The failed breakdown

One of the most powerful setups at the VAL is the trap. Price breaks below the VAL, attracts breakout sellers, then quickly returns inside the value area. Those sellers are now trapped and must buy back, fuelling a move higher.

A Simple Example

Imagine yesterday’s EUR/USD profile had a POC at 1.0900 and a VAL at 1.0870. Today, price drops to 1.0865 during the London session, prints a long lower wick and closes the 15-minute candle at 1.0878. The move below the VAL failed, and price is back inside value. A trader might buy near 1.0878 with a stop below 1.0860 and a first target at the 1.0900 POC. These numbers are illustrative only, but the logic applies to any pair.

Context Matters

The same VAL can produce a bounce one day and a breakdown the next. Before trading it, ask:

Frequently Asked Questions

What is VAL in Volume Profile?
VAL stands for Value Area Low, the lower boundary of the range containing about 70% of volume in a Volume Profile.

Is the VAL always support?
No. It often acts as support when price comes from above, but a confirmed break below it can turn it into resistance.

What is the difference between the VAL and the POC?
The POC is the single price with the most volume; the VAL is the lower edge of the whole value area.

Which timeframe profile should I use for the VAL?
Use the previous day’s profile for intraday trading and weekly or monthly profiles for swing trading.

Conclusion

The Value Area Low shows where the market’s fair value ends on the downside. Price reacting at the VAL tells you whether buyers still defend value or whether the market is ready to move lower. Combine the VAL with the POC and VAH, respect the trend, and you will have a clear, repeatable framework for trading support in Forex.
