Fractals Indicator in Forex: How to Trade Bill Williams Fractals

Every trading strategy needs a way to identify swing highs and swing lows. You need them to read market structure, place stops, find breakout levels and spot where liquidity is resting. Marking them by eye is subjective, and two traders rarely mark the same points. The Fractals indicator solves this with a simple, objective rule that has been built into MetaTrader for years.

This guide explains what fractals are, how they form, why they appear with a delay, and how to use them in practical Forex trading strategies.

What is a Fractal in Trading?

In trading, a fractal is a small, repeating price pattern that marks a potential turning point. The concept was popularised by trader and author Bill Williams, who introduced it in his book Trading Chaos as part of a group of indicators that also includes the Alligator and the Awesome Oscillator.

The word “fractal” comes from mathematics, where it describes shapes that repeat at different scales. Financial markets show a similar property: the same patterns of swings appear on a one-minute chart, a one-hour chart and a daily chart. That is why the Fractals indicator works on any timeframe.

How a Fractal Forms

The standard Bill Williams fractal uses five candles:

  • Up fractal (bearish fractal): the middle candle has the highest high, with two candles on each side that have lower highs. It marks a potential swing high, or resistance.
  • Down fractal (bullish fractal): the middle candle has the lowest low, with two candles on each side that have higher lows. It marks a potential swing low, or support.

On MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5, the Fractals indicator draws a small arrow above up fractals and below down fractals. You can find it under the Bill Williams indicators menu.

The pattern relies only on the highs and lows of each candle, so reading price action and candle structure clearly helps you judge how strong each fractal is.

The Delay: Why Fractals Appear Late

A fractal cannot be confirmed until two candles have closed after the middle candle. Until then, a new candle could make a higher high or lower low and cancel the pattern.

This creates two important points:

  • Lag: a fractal always appears at least two candles after the actual turning point. On a one-hour chart, that is two hours late.
  • “Repainting” on the live candle: before confirmation, a forming fractal can appear and disappear as price moves. Once confirmed, it does not change.

Always base decisions on confirmed fractals, and remember that the signal arrives after the turn has already happened. Fractals are best used to define levels, not to catch exact tops and bottoms.

Fractal Settings

The standard setting uses two candles on each side of the middle candle. Some custom fractal indicators let you change this number:

  • Fewer candles (1 each side): more fractals, faster signals, more noise.
  • More candles (3 to 5 each side): fewer, more significant swing points, but more lag.

Many traders use the default on their entry timeframe and a higher setting, or a higher timeframe, to identify major swing points.

How to Use Fractals in Forex Trading

Identify market structure

Fractals give you objective swing highs and lows. Higher up fractals and higher down fractals show an uptrend; lower up fractals and lower down fractals show a downtrend. A break of the most recent fractal against the trend can signal a change in structure, a key idea in Smart Money Concepts.

Fractal breakout entries

A classic approach is to place a buy stop a few pips above the most recent up fractal and a sell stop a few pips below the most recent down fractal. When price breaks the fractal, the order triggers in the direction of momentum. To reduce false breakouts, trade only in the direction of the higher-timeframe trend.

Stop-loss placement

Fractals offer logical stop levels. In a long trade, place the stop a few pips below the most recent down fractal. As the trend develops and new down fractals form higher, trail your stop to each new fractal to lock in profits.

Finding liquidity

Fractal highs and lows are exactly where many traders place stops and breakout orders. That makes them natural pools of liquidity. A quick move beyond a fractal that immediately reverses may be a liquidity sweep rather than a real breakout.

Order blocks and breakers

Fractal swing points help you locate the candles that form order blocks and breaker blocks, since these zones form around significant swing highs and lows.

Bill Williams’ Fractal and Alligator Strategy

Bill Williams designed fractals to work with the Alligator indicator, which uses three smoothed moving averages (the Jaw, Teeth and Lips). His basic rules are:

  • A buy fractal signal is valid when the up fractal forms above the Alligator’s Teeth (the red line). A break above that fractal is a potential long entry.
  • A sell fractal signal is valid when the down fractal forms below the Teeth. A break below that fractal is a potential short entry.
  • Fractals that form inside the Alligator’s “mouth”, between the lines, are generally ignored, because the market is likely ranging.

This filter helps avoid breakout trades during sideways markets, where fractal breakouts often fail.

Combining Fractals With Other Tools

  • Fibonacci retracements: draw Fibonacci levels from a down fractal to an up fractal to find pullback entries.
  • Volume Profile: a fractal that forms near the Point of Control or a value area edge carries more weight.
  • ICT concepts: use fractal highs and lows as reference points for liquidity, structure shifts and premium or discount zones, as explained in our guide to ICT trading.
  • Volume: a fractal formed on a high-volume bar can signal stronger rejection, a concept explored in Volume Spread Analysis.
  • Time and geometry: some traders combine fractal swing points with Gann angles or time cycles to project future turning points.

Fractals in Expert Advisors

Because fractals follow a strict rule, they are easy to code. Many EAs use them to find swing points, trail stops or trigger breakout orders. When testing a fractal-based EA, make sure it only uses confirmed fractals, typically from two or more bars back. Reading the value from the current or previous bar can create unrealistic backtest results.

Limitations of Fractals

  • Lag: signals always appear after the turn.
  • Many signals in ranges: sideways markets produce frequent fractals with little meaning.
  • No sense of strength: a small fractal and a major swing look the same on the chart.
  • False breakouts: fractal breaks often fail without a trend filter.

Use fractals as a framework for levels and structure, and combine them with trend, context and sound risk management.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Fractals indicator?
It is a Bill Williams indicator that marks potential swing highs and lows using a five-candle pattern.

Do fractals repaint?
A fractal can appear and disappear while it is forming, but once two candles have closed after the middle candle, it is confirmed and does not change.

What is the best timeframe for fractals?
Fractals work on all timeframes. Higher timeframes produce fewer but more significant swing points.

How do I trade fractals?
Common methods include breakout entries above or below fractals, trailing stops behind fractals and using fractals to define market structure and liquidity.

Conclusion

The Fractals indicator turns the subjective task of marking swing highs and lows into a clear, objective rule. While fractals always appear with a delay, they provide reliable reference points for market structure, breakout entries, stop placement and liquidity. Combine them with a trend filter such as the Alligator, Volume Profile levels and smart money concepts to build a more complete trading approach.
